2009 Alumni Award Recipients
Distinction guides the strategic imperatives that define theCollege of Nursing at Michigan State University. The College and its Alumni Association applaud excellence with this announcement of the 2009 Alumni Award Recipients.
 
Distinguished Alumni Award- Patricia Hemingway Hall
Patricia Hemingway Hall (CON BSN '75) is the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award. Patricia received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University in 1975. She also holds a Master of Science in Public Health, Health Planning and Administration from the University of Michigan.
 
Combining a strong nursing foundation with advanced education and clinical experience helped to position Patricia for a large range of professional possibilities. In February 2008, she was named the President and Chief Executive Officer of Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation, the nation's fourth-largest health insurance company with more than 12 million members. Prior to this appointment, Patricia served as the company's president and chief operating officer. She spends much of her free time volunteering for various organizations and is a member of a number of boards.
 
From ICU nurse to President and Chief Executive Officer, Patricia has defined her own Spartan legacy by accomplishing many firsts for women in healthcare. She was part of the team which established one of the nation's first Preferred Provider Organization, assumed the role of Aetna's first female vice president, and has now been named the first female president and chief executive officer of Health Care Service Corporation.
 
Named one of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare in 2009 by Modern Healthcare, Patricia has worked tirelessly for more than 30 years to improve healthcare outcomes, specifically in the fight to enhance affordability and accessibility of healthcare for all people. She is a passionate leader that is making a difference in the profession
of healthcare.


Alumni Service Award- Andrea Kline Tilford
Andrea Kline Tilford (CON BSN '92) is the recipient of the 2009 Alumni Service Award. Andrea graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University in 1992. In 1997, she earned a Master of Science in Maternal Child Health Nursing from Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. She has also completed a Post-Graduate Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program and, is currently enrolled in a Doctoral program at Rush University.
 
Andrea has dedicated her time and energy to the nursing profession. After graduating from Michigan State University, she worked at the Children's Hospital of Michigan as a staff nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Two years later, Andrea moved to Chicago to begin work at the Children's Memorial Hospital as a staff nurse and later as a pediatric critical care nurse practitioner.
 
Since 1999, Andrea has given over 50 professional presentations throughout the country for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, National Association of Critical Care Nurses, Society of Critical Care Medicine and other national organizations. Presentations have ranged from Deep Vein Thrombosis Prophylaxis: Is it Needed in Children? to The BIG Problem: Obesity in the PICU. She has contributed to nine book chapters the latest being Pediatric Problem-Based Learning Discussions: A companion to the multi-professional critical care review for the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

 
Recent Graduate Achievement Award - Sarah Bergman
Sarah Bergman (CON BSN ‘02) is the recipient of 2009 Recent Graduate Achievement Award. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University in 2002. She also received a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, with a Nursing Focus, from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois in 2008.
Andrea dedicates a great amount of her time to the service of others. She is part of numerous volunteer and service organizations where she contributes her professional expertise to benefit humanity. Andrea has remained an active member of several professional and governmental affiliations from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses to the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Andrea recently moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, and is now working in the pulmonary critical care unit at Riley Children's Hospital.
 
While at Michigan State University, Sarah was awarded the Lorene R. Fisher Award for Student Nurse of the Year sponsored by The Detroit News, and was also recognized as an Outstanding Undergraduate Student at the 2002 Nursing Commencement and Pinning Ceremony. After graduation, she moved to Chicago to work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. As a staff nurse, Sarah provided care for patients with multiple medical problems and assessed changes in patient's physiological and behavioral health on a general medicine unit.
 
In 2003, Sarah began working as a school nurse for PreK-12th grade students at The Schools of St. Benedict in Chicago. There, she developed school health policies and protocols as well as educated and coordinated staff and community programs. In 2005, Sarah provided care for children as a contingency registered nurse at the Chicago Children's Memorial Hospital. Currently, Sarah is working at Rush University Nursing Facility Practice. She served as a nursing supervisor for one year and now as program coordinator of the Asthma Center where she educates patients on how to lead healthy lives while also leading community outreach programs.
 
Sarah is actively engaged with the College of Nursing. She has participated in numerous alumni gatherings held in Chicago and in 2006, organized a Nurses Week Fundraiser in Chicago for the College's Building Addition to Life Sciences. In 2007, Sarah was a nursing volunteer for the Himalayan Health Exchange Primary Care for three weeks in India.
