Professor Emeritus Alvin Arens earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota. Now retired after thirty-eight years in the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University, Alvin’s invaluable contributions included serving the university in the capacities of faculty member, researcher and author. He served as president of the American Accounting Association (AAA) from 1990 to 1991. He was selected as one of five national auditing educators to be named a PricewaterhouseCoopers Auditing Professor and was held the first named accounting professorship at Michigan State University.
Also known for his auditing text book, Auditing: An Integrated Approach, Alvin has given back to Michigan State University and beyond in many different ways. He traveled to the People’s Republic of China among other Southeast Asian countries as the AAA Distinguished International Visiting Lecturer. Travel is important to Alvin and Irene, who frequently visit Norway to see Irene’s family.
Alvin and his wife, Irene, have been generous donors to Michigan State University for many years. The Alvin and Irene Arens Scholarship in the College of Nursing are awarded to students who are pursuing a degree in nursing from Michigan State University. Established by the couple in 2006, the intent of this four-year scholarship is to encourage the pursuit of academic excellence and to impact the lives of undergraduate students that might not otherwise have the means to pursue higher education. Preference is given to students who are single parents with financial responsibility for their children.
As a single parent, Annette Hicks ’08 is grateful for the scholarship for a number of reasons. “To me this scholarship is more meaningful than a dollar amount,” said Annette. “The time that it will allow me to be able to spend with my daughter and the elimination of the financial stress of my education is priceless.” Currently, three other MSU students are also recipients of this scholarship: Angel Thompson, ’08, Kshantiney Langford, ’11 and Katharine Minadeo, ’11.
Alvin and Irene Arens continue to make a difference.
