In the Spotlight: Mary Wierenga, Alumni Board Florida State Champion

Mary Wierenga (CON BSN '68, PhD '79) is actively serving as the College of Nursing Florida State Champion. There are currently over 150 nursing alumni that reside in the state of Florida. Mary's role
as the State Champion is to connect and engage Spartan Nursing Alumni to each other, the College of Nursing, and the nursing profession.

Mary has had a long history of dedication to Michigan State University. She chose to attend MSU because of our reputation for providing quality education and the flexibility to build both knowledge and skills throughout the program. As a member of the Alumni Board, Mary is using these skills to connect nursing alumni to other alumni, to the college and to explore new depths of the profession.

After graduating from Michigan State, Mary remained with the College working with faculty on special projects. It was during this time she discovered her love of teaching, and wished to continue her education. She attended the University of Florida where she earned her Master of Science in Nursing. In 1979, Mary returned to Michigan State University to complete her PhD from the College of Education.

After receiving her PhD she taught at Michigan State University and then moved to the College of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM). During her tenure at UWM she served as the Associate Dean of Research, the Associate Dean of the Graduate School and was the Director of the Doctoral Program. Mary's contributions to nursing over the past 40 years are numerous and have positively impacted the nursing educational programs at UMW. She is well know for developing a stronger doctoral program and was a key player in the launching of the University's pioneer asynchronous online doctoral program.

After four decades in her esteemed roles in higher education, Mary retired from her full-time responsibilities. Though retired from some of her professional roles, Mary continues to be an active member of the nursing profession, teaching a doctoral students dissertation seminar through UMW. She also remains an important dynamic for the Michigan State Alumni Board, serving as the Florida State Champion as a liaison from the University to our graduates.

As a State Champion, Mary is a great College resource for nursing alumni in Florida. She is interested in learning what you are doing since your days at MSU and to share with the College your invaluable insight on the nursing profession.
