Andrea Schewe (CON BSN '70) is the College of Nursing Alumni Association (CONAA) Board Illinois State Champion. In her role as CONAA State Champion, she is charged with keeping Illinois nursing alumni informed and connected to the College and Michigan State University.
Following in her parents' footsteps, Andrea chose MSU because of the quality education she would receive. The College of Nursing was an easy choice for Andrea, growing up with many mentors, now colleagues, in the profession. Throughout her academic experiences at MSU, Andrea's professors emphasized the importance of having an educational foundation rooted in the fundamentals of patient-care.
After graduating from MSU with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Andrea accepted employment in the neonatology department at Sparrow Hospital (Lansing, Michigan). Additionally, she worked as a nurse practitioner in the pediatric department at Health Central where she also served in the capacity of practice manager in their offices of obstetrics, pediatric and family planning. Andrea also taught prenatal classes in the Lansing area for more than eight years. She was a nurse practitioner in District Health Department 34 (Cheboygan, Michigan) and coordinator of the Why Wait Program, which was designed to provide breast and cervical cancers screenings for lower income women over the age of 40. While working at District Health Department 34, she was also a consultant for the state of Michigan's social services department where she advised on nursing home compliances issues.
Prior to retirement, Andrea and her husband Bill relocated to Wheaton, Illinois in 1996, where she taught prenatal classes at Central DuPage Hospital. Today, Andrea is the Nurse for her ministry and throughout her local community. She also helps families-in-crisis by providing up-to-date information on healthcare, food, medicine and family/patient counseling.
The CONAA Board wishes to extend an invitation for you to stay engaged through Illinois State Champion, Andrea Schewe. With nearly 80 nursing alumni in the state of Illinois alone, Andrea is vested in the healthcare profession, nursing alumni, and the future of nursing education at Michigan State University. Her days at MSU ignited a passion for the nursing profession that has spanned more than 30 years.
