GIFTS AT WORK: Mary and James McCartney
Mary Browder McCartney, MA, RN, Assistant Professor Emeritus, joined the College of Nursing at Michigan State University in 1977. Mary has long held an interest in international student exchange activities. While obtaining her undergraduate degree at Ohio State University she played an influential role in establishing International Student Day.
In 1983, Mary began teaching "Nursing in London," which was offered to nursing students as well as registered nurses continuing their education. She was appointed Director for International Activities and Programming for the College of Nursing in 1991. Mary is also a recipient of the prestigious Ralph H. Smuckler Award for Advancing International Studies and Programs at Michigan State University.
Mary’s husband, James, holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering from Ohio State University. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1957 and is the co-founder of the firm, McCartney & Company, P.C. in Okemos, MI. The couple has three children and seven grandchildren.
Mary and James established the Mary B. McCartney Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship in 2000. This scholarship honors Mary and is awarded to students who are enrolled in the College’s baccalaureate, baccalaureate completion for registered nurses or master’s in nursing programs. Preference is given to students in the London study abroad program. Students in other study abroad programs are also eligible for consideration.
"The scholarship will alleviate my financial burden as I enter my senior year, allowing me to focus on my studies and planning my career in international health," Nicole Dunn said upon receiving this award at the 2008 Nursing Scholarships and Awards Ceremony.
"This scholarship will give me the opportunity to achieve my goal of studying abroad during my time at MSU. Before this award I was unsure of whether or not I would be able to afford the costs, but this scholarship will definitely help me in achieving my desire of a study abroad experience," said Emily Desmet, a recipient of the 2008 Mary B. McCartney Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship.
Mary and James continue to make a difference.
