Less than three months into the 60 for SIXTY Challenge 10 commitments have been made to help facilitate excellence in Nursing Research by supporting a modular workstation in the research wing of the new Life Sciences Building Addition. Below some recent investors in the Challenge share why they were inspired to give:
Deborah Garland (Executive Assistant to the Dean)
My husband, Anthony, and I supported the College of Nursing, 60 for SIXTY Challenge because we both have aging parents and realized that their medical care in the future will be led by their doctors, but the persons who will be delivering their ongoing care will be nurses. I have always believed that nurses are special angels who have chosen to serve humanity. Working in the College of Nursing has shown us how special nurse angels are and that indeed; this is a profession one is chosen for. Since I can't be a nurse, I willingly support the education of our nurses.
Amy Hoffman, CON PhD ‘07 (Assistant Professor)
I am so proud and honored to work at the College of Nursing at Michigan State University. The students and faculty are top-notch, inspiring, collegial, and on the cutting-edge of all that we do within and for the nursing profession. I'm really excited to be a small part of the future by watching my alma mater impact and advance the science of nursing. Go State!
Mildred Horodynski (Professor) In honor of the 60th Anniversary and my 30th year with College, I wanted to support the 60 for SIXTY Challenge. I believe in the nursing and it has been the central focus of my career. The College has helped me grow professionally and provided me the opportunity to engage in my passion for nursing research. Being able to give back to the community and help build the science towards providing early and effective interventions in reducing the risk of childhood obesity while promoting healthier children in the 21st century will benefit numerous families. I am inspired to like to contribute to this College that pursues excellence in research, education, practice for the profession of nursing.
Lorraine Robbins (Assistant Professor)
I am interested in doing whatever I can to enhance the national recognition of the College of Nursing and advance itsteaching and research missions. The ability to achieve importantobjectives can only be strengthenedwhen everyone affiliated with the College of Nursingis in one place.I am happy to contribute to a building that will reflect the pride of College of Nursing faculty, staff, students, alums, and retirees.
Louise Selanders, CON BSN ‘69 (Professor)
It has been forty-four years since I first came to the campus of Michigan State University. I was impressed – perhaps overwhelmed - with its size and energy. As I began classes in the basement of Morrill Hall, and later in Baker Hall, I began to understand the intensity of the educational experience and that nursing was a profession for a lifetime – not just a job. Now as a member of the College of Nursing's faculty, I have been nurtured and allowed to nurture others. I have been able to share nursing's global nature and its potential in creating social change. My husband, William and I now have the opportunity to assist the College to endure and grow with nworld class programs in a world class University.
Debra Schutte (Associate Professor)
The 60 for SIXTY Challenge provides an extraordinary way to put our dollars to work for the good of the College of Nursing. By investing in the College of Nursing Building Addition, I am able to support the critical goal of providing a space that brings together all of our students and faculty and that supports our growing and vibrant research mission. Thank you for the opportunity to help create one building to support one community of nurse scholars at MSU.
Regina Traylor (Director, Student Support Services)
My choice of nursing as a career has been one of the best decisions I have made. The choice has given me innumerable and diverse opportunities. My passion to see others afforded excellent opportunities in a nursing career has fueled my desire to participate in the 60 for SIXTY Challenge. It has been impressive to see the College of Nursing take on the challenge of increasing enrollment because of the massive nursing shortage encountered nationally. Growth of this nature requires additional faculty and space. By investing in the College, it will allow the opportunity for all students, administration, faculty and support staff to be in one location on campus, creating a richer environment us all to prosper. If seeding into MSU is what it takes for my husband, James, and I to have a positive impact on the nursing shortage and affording the students better facilities, then we are all for it.
Some Alumni and Groups have also started working together towards investing in a commitment in support of the Challenge.By donating a smaller amount that can be combined to meet the $10,000 commitment, a modular workstation will be named after the class or group. See below those that are joining together to invest:
