Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Michigan State University has been awarded nearly $7.45 million from the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Research Resources.

The award will provide support to expand the research facilities and capacity in the College of Nursing and enable the relocation of the Nursing Research Center and faculty into THE BOTT BUILDING for Nursing Education and Research. The Building also has $10.15 million in non federal support, including a $7 million commitment from The Timothy and Bernadette Marquez Foundation.

MSU is expected to break ground on the Building this summer.

"Two of the three floors in the new building will be dedicated to nursing research,” said Dean Mary Mundt. "The new space will create an environment conducive to growth in our research teams and efficiencies in our grant management process. It will also enable new opportunities for collaboration and mentorship and, better integration of the research mission of the College with the education and clinical practice missions.”

Consistent with the priorities of the NIH and NINR, College of Nursing researchers conduct research in critical areas such as obesity prevention, symptom management, cancer, gerontology and health promotion. MSU nurse researchers are actively advancing science, with the aim to translate research findings into practice.

With a history of NIH funding dating back to 1978, the College has strategic plans to expand upon the strengths of existing research faculty with the hiring of additional research scholars over the course of the next 3-5 years.

"MSU is internationally known as a top U.S. research university,” President Lou Anna K. Simon said. "Receiving this funding is a symbol of our dedication to advancing nursing research and creates momentum that will help improve care and transform health care delivery systems.”

This project titled, "Michigan State University - Life Science Complex: Nursing Research Addition,” was supported by Award Number C06RR030356 from the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Research Resources.

Congratulations to the Dean, faculty and staff of the CON for receiving this prestigious award. These grants are highly competitive so it is a special honor for the CON to merit such a grant. The nursing reserarch conducted by the MSU faculty is internationally known and has made significant contributions to the body of nursing knowledge and to interdiciplinary care. This grant will promote nursing and interdisciplinary research to further the improvement of patient care and the prevention of illness. Congratulations!!!
