The College of Nursing is proud to announce recipients of the federal Advanced Nursing Education Expansion Nurse Practitioner Traineeship.

To help accelerate graduation and entry into the workforce, student recipients will receive $22,000 a year, for up to two years. The aim of the stipend is to help students reduce their financial burden so they can enroll in the Nurse Practitioner program full-time.

Student recipients include:

  • Laura Amedro, Class of 2012, Ann Arbor, MI
  • Lindsey DeJager, Class of 2012, Grand Rapids, MI
  • Rebecca Gabrick, Class of 2012, Kalamazoo, MI
  • Rebecca Rousse, Class of 2012, Lansing, MI
  • Elizabeth Wanner, Class of 2012, Brighton, MI

"There is a significant need to help master's students fund their education. This is evidenced by the high number of students pursuing part-time study,” said Teresa Wehrwein, Associate Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs. "In 2010, only 14 percent of students in the Nurse Practitioner program were enrolled full-time. This Traineeship infuses considerable financial support to talented and well deserving students pursuing advanced Nurse Practitioner degrees at Michigan State University.”

The stipends are made possible by a $1.42 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. The grant will provide funding support to nurse practitioner students for the next five years, allowing the College of Nursing to expand the primary care nurse practitioner program.

The College of Nursing has a long history of producing outstanding Nurse Practitioners. MSU Nurse Practitioner students are placed in over 300 urban and rural clinical settings throughout Michigan. Many graduates of the program choose to stay in Michigan, including underserved areas of the state.

Since 1970, the College of Nursing has been delivering the advanced education and clinical competencies necessary for nurse practitioners to deliver primary care. Over the past 40 years, the College of Nursing has graduated nearly 700 students from the Adult Nurse Practitioner and Family Health Nurse Practitioner concentrations.
