Friday, March 09, 2007
The Michigan State University College of Nursing research faculty, doctoral students, and alumni presented research findings at the annual cancer nursing research conference. The ninth annual National Conference on Cancer Nursing Research was held Feb. 8 through 10 in Hollywood, Calif., and attracted cancer researchers from around the nation.
Among Michigan State University’s presenters were:
• Barbara Given, a University Distinguished Professor who discussed the results of her research project, an Automated Telephone Symptom Management, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Instructions on how to manage symptoms that arise with the administration of chemotherapy were discussed.
• Gwen Wyatt, a professor of nursing, discussed the use of complementary and alternative therapies, which is used by as many as 80 percent of cancer patients. Wyatt has been involved in studies in which reflexology, a specialized foot therapy, is used as a complementary therapy for women receiving chemotherapy in the late stages of breast cancer.
• Jackie Keene Miron, a nursing Ph.D. candidate, presented research relating to the symptoms patients experience during chemotherapy treatments. Specifically, she is investigating the frequency and intensity of symptoms a patient experiences at various times during treatment. Jackie’s research is titled “Frequency, Intensity, and Distress Associated with Chemotherapy Symptoms” and is funded by Oncology Nursing Society Foundation, Trish Green Research Grant.
• Amy Hoffman, a nursing Ph.D. candidate, presented research related to the inter-relationship between physical and psychological symptoms suffered by lung cancer patients that have received chemotherapy in comparison to other types of cancer diagnoses. Amy Hoffman’s Research Funding Sources Include: National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Nursing Research, Behavioral Cooperative Oncology Group, Walther Cancer Institute, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation.
• Paula Sherwood, a former doctoral student and Michigan State University alum, did a poster presentation titled “Mind Body Interaction in Neuron-oncology Caregivers,” which is funded by Cancer and Aging Center at the University of Pittsburgh, Oncology Nursing Foundation and American Brain Tumor Association.
The National Conference on Cancer Nursing Research is the most comprehensive event of its kind, providing a forum to disseminate research findings which can then translate into practice.
