Dr. Barbara Given, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been selected as the new Associate Dean of Research for the College of Nursing at Michigan State University.
Dr. Given’s previous work and studies have prepared her well for her new position within the college. She plans to use her knowledge and expertise to advance the scientific research initiatives of the college.
“I plan to bring my previous administrative experience of the Research Center and 30 years of funded grant knowledge to the position,” Dr. Given said. “Also, my work with management of large research teams and years of experience with review, research agenda setting, and policy testimony at NIH, especially NINR, NCI, and the American Cancer Society contribute to my qualifications.”
Dr. Barbara Given received both her baccalaureate and master’s degrees in nursing from Ohio State University before coming to Michigan State University in 1966. She received her doctoral degree from Michigan State University in 1976 and began as Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in 1980. She was promoted to Senior Research Scientist in 2000 and University Distinguished Professor in 2001.
“I have been at the university for a very long time and know the university system,” Dr. Given said. “Our research studies and my grant review expertise for NIH prepare me to understand the essential components of successful and competitive grants. My presentation and publication record reflects knowledge of scholarship that contributes to science.”
Dr. Given has worked on multiple research projects and publications throughout her career with a focus on areas such as long-term cancer care, family home care, and cancer care/intervention. Other topics of interest for Dr. Given include chronic illness, gerontology, symptom management and health services research.
Her research and contributions to the nursing profession have won her various awards including the “Life Time Achievement Award, College of Nursing
Alumni Association,” as well as the “Elizabeth McWilliams-Miller Award for Excellence in Research.”
With the help of her fellow coworkers and Michigan State University students, Dr. Barbara Given plans to continue her success leading the College of Nursing as Associate Dean of Research.
“My goals for the college can only be achieved with the faculty and students,” Dr. Given said. “These goals come from the Strategic Planning Priorities of the college, consistent with the University Boldness by Design Program. We desire to maintain our NIH funding ranking, increase the number of funded grants, increase the number of high impact publications and presentations, and actively collaborate with interdisciplinary university initiatives. That will be our challenge.”
Dr. Barbara Given is ready for the challenge ahead. As the Associate Dean of Research, Dr. Given will support the research efforts of all faculty and students in the Michigan State University College of Nursing. Her expertise will lead the transformation of nursing research to a heightened level of exploration and impact.
